HISTORY

It was on Sunday 27th August 1967 at 9am at a very historical house, plot number 425 in Extension 4 – Gaborone.

This was the residence of the Sedirwa’s family.

An impromptu, but planned meeting took place in this house chaired by Mr. Osbert Kgabosetso Sedirwa, Mr. Robert Moirwagale, Mr. David Mophuting, Mrs. Eunice T.S Radebe (Recording), Necta Senwelo, Mr. Boyce Mothobi, Mr. David Molefi, Mr. Maitshwarelo Dabutha, Mr. Julius Mathangwane, Mr. Toro Lenamile, Mr. Bankane Mokgware, Mr. Peter Jane, Mrs. Ethna Keabetswe Dabutha, Mr. Gagonakago Mojalemotho, Mr. Sandy Raditladi, Mr. Jonathan Molapo, Mr. Aaron Gare.

The purpose of this meeting was to form a football club. Gaborone United Sporting Club was formed and Mr. Osbert Sedirwa chaired the deliberations assisted by Mr. R. Moirwagale. Mr. David Mophuting, Mr. T. Lenamile, Mr. B. Mokgware and Mr. M. Dabutha were assigned the task of organising and recruiting players. They did this within a short space of time and the team started practicing at Gaborone Secondary School grounds.

The new Gaborone United enjoyed the arrival of Mr. Willie Matheadira Seboni from Zambia and Mr. Oarabile Kalaben, this was in December 1967. Mr. Seboni and Mr. Kalaben were well received and given executive positions. Mr. Seboni was given a managerial position of the team. One of the objectives of the club was to establish a league in Botswana. Gaborone United, composed of powerful professional eloquent men managed to convince the then South African Breweries who ultimately agreed to sponsor the super league in Botswana.

As if it was payback for the sweat of Gaborone United Executive, the team won the league for eight consecutive years. The team was then nicknamed the “money machine”. During that time, GU went on a winning spree winning other competitions. In preparations to celebrate ten years of existence of the club, they bought a minibus in Mafikeng and it was the first team to own a minibus. The Gaborone United executive committee continued to attract sponsors because of its good management.
